During a cut, many coaches keep protein grams steady or slightly higher while calories fall, so carbs and fats absorb most of the reduction. During a gain phase, protein still matters, but total calories and progressive training drive weight change more than tiny protein tweaks.

Food labels and cooking losses

If you eat mostly whole foods without labels, use a trusted database and the same entries each week so your log stays comparable.
