How tile quantity is calculated
The live tool converts the room to square inches, divides by one tile face area, multiplies by (1 + waste fraction), then rounds up to a whole tile count.
Tiles = ceil((room length ft × 12 × room width ft × 12 ÷ (tile length in × tile width in)) × (1 + waste% ÷ 100))
Keep openings honest. Deduct doors and windows only when you will not tile those regions. Undercounting openings is safer than cutting your order too tightly.
Worked bathroom floor example
A bathroom floor is 8 ft × 5 ft. Tiles are 12 in × 12 in. With 10 percent waste:
Room area in square inches = 8 × 12 × 5 × 12 = 5,760.
Tile area = 144 in².
Base ratio = 40 tiles.
With waste = ceil(40 × 1.10) = 44 tiles.
If boxes contain 10 tiles, buy 5 boxes (50 tiles).

Backsplash and wall examples
A 10 ft × 1.5 ft backsplash is 15 ft². Using 3 in × 6 in tiles (18 in² each) needs 15 × 144 ÷ 18 = 120 tiles before waste. With 10 percent waste, plan about 132 tiles, then round to box counts.
For multiple walls, calculate each surface, add tiles, then apply waste once to the total if the same tile SKU is used everywhere.
Waste allowance versus full-box overage
Waste covers cuts, breakage, and future repairs. Box rounding can add extra tiles beyond that waste. Record both numbers: tiles after waste, and tiles after box rounding. That prevents double counting when you explain the order to a supplier.

Buy all boxes for a continuous surface from one dye lot when possible. If you must add boxes later, open and blend cartons during install. Store one spare box for repairs after the project ends, especially for discontinued colors.
When comparing store SKUs, confirm face size and thickness match. A “12×12” marketing label can still differ slightly by brand, which changes how many tiles fit a measured room.
Wet areas, membranes, and heated floors
Showers and exterior tiles often need membranes and slope to drains. Those systems do not change the face-tile count much, but they change materials cost and install time. Heated floor mats need a layout that respects mat coverage and tile cuts, so leave extra waste when mats force awkward seams.
Wall tile over tubs should account for height to the ceiling or to a chosen termination line. Measure each wall, add them, then apply waste once if leftover pieces can move between walls.
