This square footage calculator multiplies length by width, then by the number of rooms or sections. Use it for flooring estimates, paint planning, storage sizing, or a quick room area check in feet.
Measure in the same unit for length and width. The result is area in square feet when both sides are in feet.
How to measure
- Measure the longest usable length of the floor or wall run.
- Measure the width at a right angle to that length.
- Enter how many identical rooms or sections share those sizes.
- For L shapes, split into rectangles, run each section, and add the results.
Worked examples
Default style example: 12 ft by 15 ft for 1 room equals 180 square feet. Two identical 12 by 10 rooms equal 240 square feet.

Flooring and material planning
Flooring stores often sell by the box covering a set square footage. Divide your area by coverage per box and round up. Add waste for cuts. Many DIY flooring jobs use about 5 to 10 percent extra, more for diagonal layouts.
Exclude closets or include them on purpose. Write which areas you measured so a helper does not double count a hallway.
Exclusions and odd shapes
Subtract stair openings or large permanent cabinets only if your material plan excludes them. For triangles, area is roughly half of base times height, then add that to rectangles outside this simple tool.
Cost notes
Multiply square footage by a material price per square foot for a rough material budget. Labor, underlayment, and trim are separate. This calculator does not store live material prices.

Units and rounding
Keep units consistent across every field. Mixing inches with feet, litres with gallons, or monthly figures with annual figures is the most common source of wrong answers.
Round only at the end for ordering or payments. Early rounding in each step can stack into a surprising gap versus the live calculator.
What this estimate does not include
Taxes, delivery fees, labor, penalties, and one time service charges are often outside the core formula. Add those on paper when you build a real budget.
Local rules, code requirements, and lender overlays can still change the final decision even when the math is correct.

Recalculate once with a pencil using the same formula shown on this page. If your manual result is close to the tool, your inputs are probably consistent.
If the two answers diverge, check the field labels again before you trust either number for spending or filing.
