How the formula works
Let w equal final weight ÷ 100. Needed on final equals (desired – current × (1 – w)) ÷ w. The portion of the grade already earned is current times (1 – w). The final must supply the rest of the desired overall.
Worked example
Current grade 85 percent, final weight 30 percent, desired overall 90 percent. Needed = (90 – 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 – 59.5) ÷ 0.30 ≈ 101.67 percent.

How to use the fields
- Current grade % should be your grade before the final, on the same scale your syllabus uses.
- Final exam weight % is the share of the course assigned to the final.

Reading impossible targets
When needed exceeds 100 percent, the desired overall is out of reach with this final weight alone. Options include accepting a lower desired grade, confirming extra credit rules, or checking whether current already includes items still pending.
Syllabus checks
Some courses drop a lowest quiz, curve the final, or cap scores. Rebuild current after those rules, then run the calculator again. If the final is a take home with a different weight than you assumed, update weight before you trust the needed score.
